Snow Day!

Winter in Des Moines has finally arrived! It’s taken a long time being it’s already February 4. Don’t forget to stay active on snow days. While it might be enticing to stay inside all day, take a break to build a snowman, go sledding, or ice skating. Shoveling snow can be a great workout as well!

According to the Livestrong website, shoveling snow can burn more calories than you might suspect. Here are the quick numbers:

120 pound individual=165 calories per 30 minutes of shoveling

140 pound individual= 200 calories per 30 minutes

200 pound individual= 275 calories per 30 minutes

Of course these are mere estimates and variables such as temperature and pace of shoveling impact the true caloric expenditure. So the next time you need to shovel snow, don’t think of it as a chore, think of it as an extra workout for the day!

Great advice! I live in the desert so no snow shoveling but only 1.5 hour drive north and we have lots of snow! I will bring my shovel if we head up there soon!
